Welcome to part two of the designing process for our new collection! In part one we selected two warp colours based on your feedback, so today is all about choosing the wefts for the new wraps.
recap: Which warp colours did you choose?
The collection will be woven on a split warp, meaning that the wraps will be woven on two different warp colours. These are:
Twilight
This will be a solid warp in a ever-so-slightly darker shade of our classic Twilight colour. We chose this as our first ever warp colour back in 2012/13 because it has some pretty special chameleon qualities allowing it to change according to the weft it is paired with. It sits in a magical space between blue and purple, is dark yet vibrant, can be cool or warm. We’re slowing Firespiral down to a grandmotherly stroll as all our children start to hit their teens and our lives move on. We’re releasing fewer collections and it feels right to revisit the warp that started it all off.
Sunrise
This will be a tri-coloured grad from the sunhaze golden shade to a natural beige/cream shade. We can choose which way up we weave the landscape style designs, to either have the darkest or lightest colour in the sky.
Weft Options
Now we need to choose the wefts that will be woven across both of these warps and will therefore need to look good with both Twilight and Sunrise. We’ve come up with a few suggestions to start you off. We’ll weave any of these that are particularly popular and can also add your ideas if there’s something you think of that would look really amazing. We usually weave 4 or 5 wefts across the warp to create the full collection.
Have a look at the options we’re suggesting then fill in the form to play your part in the planning of this collection!
1. Unnamed Rainbow
This would make an 100% organic combed cotton wrap in an Elements weave. It would have the same feel and wrapping qualities as the Aqua Pink/Blood Moon Seafoams that were never officially released so there isn’t much information about them online. Light and thin in hand yet very hardwearing, supportive and easy to wrap with. Not at all pull prone and great for new wrappers to learn with. An average of around 250gsm and a smooth textured glide. There isn’t much online about this handful of prototype wraps, but Laurna of Coorieinwithlove has one in her library for hire and will hopefully tell you more about the wrapping properties of this blend/weave!
We’ve chosen a classic 7 shade rainbow with a warm tone bias that we think will have a vibrant pop against the twilight and absolutely glow against the sunrise. The colours will be graduated to blend from one shade to the next and the repeat should be under a metre.
2. Tri-blend lagoon green/white
This weft would be made up of 3 different yarns alternated in a 1:1:1 pattern
White hemp: Our hemp is grown and processed in Romania using sustainable methods that minimise the need for pesticides or reliance on excess water and chemicals. It is a long fibre yarn which makes it very strong and breathable
Merino Lambswool: Spun from non-mulesed, ethically farmed wool. Merino is naturally hypoallergenic and soft to the touch. This is a chunky yarn that will add a bit of texture and bounce to the wrap. It is a flecked mix of aqua, turquoise and seagreen.
Space dyed compact cotton: This is very high quality 3-ply cotton yarn, space dyed to create a fluid shifting of colour from aquamarine to white.
Combined they’ll create a wonderful balance of wrapping qualities and an easy care wrap that can be machine washed. We aren’t sure of the GSM but would predict around 280.
3. Aconite Yellow and 4.Moss Green
These are both a merino/cotton blend yarn that we’ve used before. They make for a very stable mix that washes easily and has the bounce and cushioning of wool with the softness and ease of cotton. The aconite yellow has been woven against the twilight before as a limited run of scarves that were only available at an event somewhere. Against the sunrise grad it would create a glowing celebration of yellow!
The moss green was woven as Moss twilight winter hill many moons ago. We’d probably only weave one or the other of these two options as they’d have the same wrapping qualities. Albus Twilight Starmap was the same blend as this too. We use this yarn in fancy blends but haven’t woven it as a single weft for a long time, which is a shame!
5. Solstice-esque wool grad
This would be a 3 colour graduated weft in an 100% merino wool weft (making a 50% merino wool wrap). Its would be similar to Fantasia Aqua Curves of Pursuit in the grad and wrapping qualities, but colourwise it reminds us a little of the Solstice wraps, hence the working title! From a personal perspective, Jen would love to see this woven in the kaleidoscope design…
These wraps would be a heavyweight woolly in an alchemy weave, great for supporting heavier babies but still moulding enough to not swamp little ones.
6. Mars wool/linen
This weft would alternate our rust orange supersoft and easycare 2 ply Italian linen with a red merino lambswool, marled with flecks of bronze and copper shades. This would give a lovely textured tri-blend wrap with a weft colour reminiscent of gamma crucis starmap and a texture similar to grizedale birch trees.
How do I get involved?
All we ned now is for you to share your thoughts in the form below. We’ve tried to give you space to make your own suggestions, use the comments boxes to steer us in the right direction! Our database of previous warps might be helpful to consult if you’re trying to find a reference to explain a particular colour or idea.
