Rear Reinforced Rucksack (RRR) or ‘Pirate Carry’ :Wrapping Tutorial

Rear Reinforced Rucksack (RRR) or 'Pirate Carry' :Wrapping Tutorial
What is a Rear Reinforced ruck (RRR) or Pirate carry

As the name suggests, this is a rucksack carry with an extra pass over the top of your child to reinforce it. It goes over both your shoulders and nothing ties round your waist. It can fasten at your shoulder or one tail can go across your chest and through the opposite shoulder strap to create a ‘knotless’ finish.

What size wrap do I need?

This is a short wrap carry, probably your base-3 or base-4 size. Check out our guide if you don’t know your base size .  Lots of people will find a size 2 or 3 will work for them. Fastening at the shoulder with a metal sling ring  will allow you to use the shortest wrap possible for your body size. You may want to go up one size if you want to do a fancier finish like a ‘candy cane chest belt’ or have longer tails on your knotless finish.

pros and cons of the RRR carry
  • This is a great carry for older babies and toddlers who want to be picked up and put down a lot.
  • It only needs a short wrap, which packs up small when not in use.
  • The reinforcing pass gives extra support despite the short length of the wrap
  • The wrap doesn’t go round your waist, which can be good if you find that a sensitive area.
  • It only has a few simple steps to follow, so easy to learn

However:

  • It can be tricky to keep the tension in the wrap as you tie it
  • It can be tricky to get the second pass high over your baby
  • You might find it heavy on your shoulders for long periods of time
  • It is better suited to older children.
Wrapping Instructions for the RRR carry

Our step by step instructions start at the point where you’ve already got your baby onto your back. This is because there are several ways to move your baby onto your back, and you should use your preferred method. If you aren’t sure about this step yet then our guide to getting your baby onto your back will show you 3 ways to do it and you can choose your favourite!

Here’s a video demonstrating the carry. Jen has a restricted shoulder and can’t move the wrap far enough back to create the second pass in one movement, but you may be able to!

We have a variety of short wraps in our shop!
